Cold Cesium Gases in Optical Traps : BEC, 2D, etc...

Cesium atoms exhibit very unusual quantum-mechanical scattering properties with dramatic consequences for experiments with ultracold ensembles.

I will report on our recent experiments performed with Cs in optical traps:

  1. measurements on three-body processes,
  2. the attainmentof a Bose-Einstein condensate, and 3) the realization of a two-dimensional gas in a surface trap.
