The greatest resources of the department are the people present on a day basis in its labs, classrooms, common services and library.

With its 120 permanent research staff (“chercheurs/enseignants-chercheurs”) and 450 overall personnel (of which 43 are directly affected to the Federation), the ENS physics department is the largest department of the ENS.
The department occupies 12,000 m² of a historic building at rue Lhomond, on the ENS campus in Paris, 2,000 m² on the neighbouring Jussieu campus of UPMC) and some buildings at Collège de France.
